Like A Prayer (Geraldine Wharry)

The drama of fashion finds a perfect canvas with iconic religious art, remixed with a sense of pop art and brand recuperation on the heels of Vêtements leading the way for all things subverted.

Think Madonna in 1984 using Rosary beads as her fashion statement. And Pierre et Gilles, the photography duo responsible for Jean Paul Gaultier's classic perfume shoots for "Le Male" and kitsch-meets-religious photography of celebrities ranging from Lio to Boy George and Kylie Minogue to name a few.

Neon lights, bold messages and metallics meet mystical and folkloric iconography. None other than Beyonce utilised this to recently announce her second pregnancy.
Subverting religion and even sexualising it stirs up the tension between purity and the loss of innocence.

Sanchez Kane, Fashionclash Festtival 2016 / Dilara Findikoglu SS17

More recently Aalto for their AW2017 catwalk featured surreal and kitsch re-interpretations of Caravaggio paintings mixed with street styling.
