Balmain - Spring Summer Women Collection 2013 in Paris (itw)
First a trip to miami and the meeting with the cuban handicraft, not to forget a reference to sade, popular singer in the 90s ...it is with all these references that olivier rousteing worked on the new balmain collection where the high-waisted trousers coordinate with broad shouldered jackets. patterns are very present as are embroideries for couture effect. an outstanding job on both a jacket and a dress in wicker. the designer dares to use vivid colours, and mixes brightness and large stripes while highlighting the french savoir-faire.

interview olivier rousteing : it's a strong woman who isn't scared of anything, a sensual and latino woman, resuming stories of some photo shoots of steven meisel, peter lindbergh with the top models of the 90s such as linda evangelista, taken in cuban roads. that's why balmain has this more latino and sensual side, and at the same time sporty, it is really what excites me in this collection. i took a trip to miami before my last pre collection and i was completely inspired by the joy of life there, this happiness, the colour and the dynamics, and when i returned i wanted to work with miami and more of this latin and cuban side that i found. and that is why the jackets are in wicker, and dresses are in woven wicker, because there is this latin ornament side, all the chairs you find in miami are very latin and i wanted to recreate this in the clothes and i also went back to basics with sade in the 90s, which for me was very beautiful, very chic, very elegant at the same time, this sporty side, masculine side, very glamorous and feminine.
the concept was to take the natural materials that i saw in miami, there was also plastic . all this handcraft is so important to the house, i think balmain needs to stay couture, it needs to stay luxurious, it's an old french couture house and for me it's important that it keeps its roots because it's something that i find extraordinary- the balmain archives, and i continue to develop through my journey in the house.
